Space Camp: Day 5, GRADUATION!

Today was GRADUATION DAY! This is an exciting day at camp. Only 800,000 people, across the entire world, have graduated from Space Camp. Some of these people have gone on to become doctors, engineers, teachers, and, of course, astronauts! Before graduation, the groups got to try the 1/6 chair. This simulator allows children to understand what gravity would feel like on the moon. They really had a lot of fun seeing how high they could jump! :) This afternoon, we had a guest speaker. Her name was Wendy Lawrence and she flew to space during the shuttle missions. Wendy was part of the first crew that did a "shuttle flip" in space. After the disaster of Columbia, shuttles would flip 360 degrees, before reentry, so the astronauts on the ISS could check to see if there was any damage on the shuttle that may cause a problem. Afterward, the parent group was fortunate enough to meet her at the hotel and take some pictures. :) It was really a special experience. Lastly, we had our GRADUATION! All teams were able to walk across the Space Camp stage and receive their diploma. Team Draco also won a special patch for their work during their Mars rover classes. And finally, Rowan won the individual award called "The Right Stuff" for being brave, patient, kind, and a leader throughout the entire week! This week was a blast! :) We were sad to leave camp but are excited to see you all in the morning! Signing off, Leslie Vosters
